My Favorite Artisans From The Tennessee Craft Show 2017 - Part 2

Welcome back to the second part of my blog series about my recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee, for the 39th Annual Tennessee Craft Fair!

It was a busy week working alongside my friend and client, Teresa Merriman of Mind's Eye Journals. The first few days were spent finalizing edits and launching her new website, and after that, I had the chance to attend the fair and meet some truly incredible artisans and makers. If you missed Part 1, make sure to check it out for even more of my favorite artists from the show.

Skwira Pottery

I have to admit, the first thing that drew me into Paddy and Greg’s booth was the sign that proudly displayed “Royal Oak, Michigan.” As a native Michigander (yes, I said Michigander!), I couldn’t resist stopping by to say hello to my fellow Michiganders. I’m so glad I did! Paddy and Greg were incredibly welcoming, and I enjoyed learning about their journey. Paddy was a teacher, and Greg was a writer for many years, so I’ll admit I’m a bit nervous knowing that he’ll likely read this! (Sorry for any grammar mistakes, Greg!)

We had a heartfelt conversation about motherhood and the often-overlooked scope of what we do as mothers every day. It was so refreshing to hear Paddy’s candid thoughts, especially since we had this conversation right in front of her husband. I loved how easily we connected, and I had the most wonderful time chatting with them both.

We also learned that they will no longer be doing art shows, choosing to focus on galleries. And, to my surprise, they have some of their work displayed in Traverse City, Michigan, where my husband is from and where I moved to after college. Fun fact: If you’ve ever visited Traverse City, one of my favorite spots is Fustini's Oil and Vinegar . They commissioned Paddy and Greg to create a dish specifically for their oils and vinegars—how cool is that? They were so kind to send me home with a beautiful little candleholder to help me unwind during my workday. I’ll treasure it always.

Ben & Lael

I had come across Ben's stunning work online a few months before the show, and I knew I had to meet him in person. His booth felt warm and inviting, and his work is simply beautiful—perfect for any home. I especially loved his large bowls! Ben was so gracious, and I’m excited that he invited me to tour his studio sometime. It would be such a great reason to plan a long weekend getaway with my husband.

We had a quick but meaningful conversation about his work and his branding efforts, and I must say, he’s doing an amazing job. I can’t wait to see where his work takes him!

BuBo-Handmade Leather Goods

I was really hoping that Kristen would have a large enough computer bag to fit my daily haul—laptop, sketchbook, notes, diapers, snacks, art supplies, change of clothes for the kids... you get the picture. Unfortunately, Kristen didn’t have anything quite big enough, or maybe I’m just too picky! But let me tell you, her collection of bags, purses, and wallets was absolutely gorgeous.

I was really impressed by her brand, the way her booth was set up, and her product photography. If I could suggest one thing, it would be for her to share a bit more of her story on her website—it would add a personal touch that could really connect with her audience.

John Sellberg Pottery

Though I didn’t have the chance to talk with John for long, we did agree on one important point: every maker needs a niche, something that sets their work apart. John’s pottery certainly has that uniqueness. His glazing technique added a touch of natural whimsy to each piece. Thanks, John, for the brief but insightful conversation—your work is beautiful!

Mirra Johnson

I had such a lovely chat with Mirra! She’s a talented weaver and such a kind soul. We spoke about her craft, her time in school, and the future of her work. I was so inspired by her enthusiasm and the excitement she has for exploring new techniques. It’s always a joy to meet someone so passionate about what they do.

Walker Jewelry

I didn’t get the chance to speak directly with Lindsay, but I did meet her fiancé, and we chatted briefly about her business. He is incredibly proud of her, and rightfully so—her jewelry is stunning, and her brand is off to a great start. Her booth was well-designed, with beautiful packaging and a mini-booth that was perfectly styled. One suggestion I would have is to clearly display her prices, as they weren’t visible during my visit. Overall, I see big things ahead for Lindsay and her brand!

Suzanne & Angelique Juneau

What a sweet duo! Suzanne and Angelique, a mother-daughter team of metalsmiths, were a delight to meet. I’m so glad I visited their booth, where I found a necklace I absolutely loved—though I really should’ve bought it while I had the chance! We talked briefly about their booth setup and photography, and I could tell they both put a lot of heart into their work.

Susan Glazer

Susan was a joy to speak with. Another artisan had recommended I stop by her booth, and I’m so glad I did. While I was initially hoping to find a pink unicorn illustration for my 3-year-old (no luck!), we ended up chatting for quite a while about her illustrations and the different directions her work could take. She has two very distinct styles—one being simple line drawings with adorable illustrations, and the other a raw watercolor-silk effect. Both are beautiful, but they appeal to very different audiences. I’m excited to see where she takes them!

Jake2Jake Custom Knives

The last stop on my journey through the Tennessee Fall Craft Show was Jake 2 Jake Custom Knives, where I met Jake and his wonderful wife. They reminded me so much of my own family—so down-to-earth and easy to talk to. Jake’s knives were absolutely gorgeous, and his craftsmanship is unparalleled. Each knife comes with a handmade leather sheath, and he even offers unique stands for displaying them.

I had a long conversation with his wife about their brand and how they’re managing growth and production. It was clear how much they both love what they do, and I can’t wait to see their business flourish. Keep up the amazing work, Jake and Kitrina!
